CHICAGO – National and statewide gas price averages have dropped by a nickel since the beginning of May. According to the American Automobile Association, it’s a trend motorists can expect to continue into June. Currently Illinois averages at 2.95 per gallon compared to $3.00 last month. LaSalle and Bureau counties experienced the biggest drop in prices, averaging 2.70 per gallon, a 12 cent decrease. While Putnam County’s averages decreased by nine cents, it remains the highest gas prices locally, at 2.78 per gallon. Today’s national average is $2.82 per gallon, which is cheaper than last month by six cents and last year by 16 cents.
