UTICA – Ice-falls are forming at Starved Rock State Park that will attract thrill-seekers to ascend the formations. Ice climbing is allowed at Wildcat, LaSalle and Ottawa Canyons, but at your own risk. Avid ice climber and Illinois Valley Community College Mathematics Instructor, Wes Black doesn’t recommend anyone to take a stab at the vertical venture without a guide.

According to the Illinois Department of Natural Resources, they do not test the ice for suitability.
Black says climbers should make sure the icefall is completely connected before even setting up.

The 70-foot high Wildcat Canyon is near frozen, according to Black. He says it’s going to take several days of below 20-degree temps for a safe climb.
