Your “Daily Dose of Uplift” for May 19th:
It was announced last week that Kenny Chesney would be postponing his 2020 Chillaxification Tour in lieu of the global pandemic. The tour was set to be monstrously successful judging by tickets sales alone, but of course, like sporting events, the abrupt suspension leaves many workers who were banking on their salary this summer in limbo.
In an interview with the Los Angeles Times, Chesney announced he would pay his 120 employees for the rest of the year.
“I don’t want to get into numbers. But it’s a lot of money. A lot of money,” Chesney said. “The initial shock of it, I looked at the numbers and went, Oh my God, this is overwhelming. And, look, it’s affecting my life — I’m not gonna say it’s not. But I had to make a decision if I was gonna keep my lifestyle the way it was or if I’m gonna take care of my people.”
It’s heartwarming to see Chesney choose the latter. We have all made sacrifices during this pandemic. Some of us have lost our jobs, some of us have lost pay, and we’ve all had to mortgage something, big or small. To see Chesney set an example should be a signal to other artists whose tours will inevitably be postponed.
