PERU – Peru Mayor Scott Harl explained to the council at Monday night’s meeting that the decision on when to reopen parks amid the COVID-19 pandemic is not up to him. As the area has entered into Phase 3 of Governor JB Pritzker’s Restore Illinois plan, restaurants have started offering outdoor dining options again. 4th Ward Alderman Aaron Buffo spoke up at the city council meeting asking why the city couldn’t allow residents to enjoy park equipment and public benches if they’re now allowed at area state parks and outdoor dining. Although Harl and other city officials agreed that there was little difference between park picnic tables and outdoor restaurant dining, they agreed that the city needs to continue to follow the governor’s orders.
