STREATOR – Streator City Council discussed potential updates to the abandoned Smith Douglas site during a special City Council meeting on Tuesday. The city is looking to apply for the Rebuild Illinois Shovel Ready Sites grant, which could provide a maximum of $2,000,000 to improve the site, which used to be the location of fertilization manufacturing. City Engineer Jeremy Palm presented the counsel a potential concept plan that showed plans for ponds to be filled in and gypsum piles to be capped for safety reasons. Palm acknowledged that the property could be used for anything, but the department had put forth plans for a recreational area, as the Smith Douglas site is currently used by trespassers as an area to ride ATVs and motorcycles. The council will vote on a resolution of support at next week’s City Council meeting.
