Your “Daily Dose of Uplift” for June 10th:
Iceland Supermarket made an unbelievably generous move this week in adopting all the Humboldt penguins from the famous Chester Zoo as the zoo faces financial hardships due to the pandemic. This comes after the UK Government announced the zoo will have to remain closed indefinitely.
Iceland Supermarket has also committed to lobbying on behalf of the Chester Zoo to convince the UK Government the zoo can reopen with the implementation of strict social distancing guidelines.
Richard Walker of Iceland Foods said in a statement: “We’re proud to be able to lend them our support both through the adoption of the Humboldt penguins on behalf of our colleagues, and by lobbying in support of zoos being allowed to reopen soon. The conservation work undertaken by the zoo is vital and along with the park itself reopening it is incredibly important that this amazing work is able to continue.”
During this time, you’re seeing a myriad of people doing neighborly things by helping friends and other businesses get by during this stressful time. Who would’ve thought a supermarket would be a potential savior for a popular zoo?
Also worth noting: the Chester Zoo currently cares for more than 35,000 threatened and critically endangered animals.
