Seeking reimbursement for a fridge gone bad? Call your insurance company

By: Daniel Lobo

LASALLE – Many across North Central Illinois are going on a multiple days without power, and facing an issue of food spoiling in their home.   Providers such as Ameren and Commonwealth Edison do offer customers the ability to make claims for damages after an extended outage, however that mostly would not apply after storms.   The USDA estimates it takes only four hours for meat, poultry, fish, and eggs to potentially to go bad when you lose power.  Many homeowners insurance policies will cover food loss, however, you will need to check with your agent to see exactly what may be covered.

Those who receive benefits from Snap or other programs can get their food replaced.   LaSalle County residents who receive assistance from the Department of Human Services should call (815)433-1572.  In Putnam County call the Community Center at 1 (815) 339-2711

The city of La Salle will have a dumpster placed in the parking lot on the north side of Maple Street near Hegeler Park for any La Salle resident needing to dispose of perished food starting Thursday morning until Friday afternoon. This dumpster is to be used strictly for perished food as a result of recent power outages and not for yard waste or general trash.
