Ask yourself: if you found a lottery ticket worth $1 million in the garbage, what would you do?

By every definition, Abhi Shah did the right thing when he found himself in the situation. He returned the ticket to the woman who discarded it.

Abhi’s parents own a convenience store in Springfield, Massachusetts. Abhi said his mother, Aruna, sold the winning ticket to one of their regular customers. The ticket sat discarded in the store for 10 days after the customer assumed it wasn’t a winner.

“One evening, I was going through the tickets from the trash and [noticed] that she didn’t scratch the number,” Abhi told WWLP. “I scratched the number and it was $1 million underneath the ticket.”

The family fretted over the decision of what to do with the winning ticket. Finally, the regular customer returned to the store and was more than a little surprised when Abhi gave her the news.

As soon as she came in, I hand her the $1 million ticket, and she freaked out and cried like a baby,” Abhi’s father Maunish said.
