MENDOTA – The Mendota Police Department demonstrated a new training aid at the City Council meeting Monday Night. DART virtual reality simulation training uses a portable projector and sensors to allow officers to turn any interior room into a training area for firearms. Mendota Police Chief Gregory Kellen said with new and updated requirements for weapons training in the state of Illinois, it would be best to prepare to handle many certifications in house. The system cost $12,300 using narcotics funds set aside for training, and no taxpayer dollars were used. The department still has access to a live fire range, but that, according to Kellen, is not available year round, and with the rising cost of ammunition, not always economical.
