SPRINGFIELD – The Governor has signed a bill amending the Missing Persons Identification Act to ensure local authorities notify state and federal officials of an unidentified body. The legislation, that will go into effect next year, requires a coroner or medical examiner to notify the FBI of the discovery of human remains they are unable to identify within 72 hours. The bill, sponsored by State Senator Elgie Sims of Chicago, was prompted by the three week delay in identifying the remains of ISU student Jelani Day, who was found in the Illinois River near Peru in September of 2021.
