Waste Management proposing fuel surcharge to the City of Streator

STREATOR – Waste Management, Streator’s trash collector, is proposing a 75-cent increase that could take effect at the start of October. City Manager Dave Plyman says Waste Management has asked the city to include a fuel surcharge due to inflated prices. City Attorney Cheryl Churney says Waste Management could have added a surcharge in their initial contract.

Waste Management is also proposing the fuel surcharge be reviewed every 4-months and potentially be adjusted. Mayor Tara Bedei thinks awarding a contract to a new provider could be risky based on what she’s learned about area communities and their struggles with other waste services. If the surcharge is approved, it could costs residents around 22 dollars a month.
