OTTAWA – The cause of the early morning Christmas Eve fire that killed two Ottawa residents has been released. The Ottawa Fire Department say that the investigation by the State Fire Marshall found that an unattended cooking container was left on a stovetop with the burner on. The apartment, located in the 1500 block of Sycamore Street, suffered heavy smoke and fire damage in the kitchen and living room areas. Two unresponsive victims were found in a bedroom, and the residents, a mother and a child succumb to their injuries at an area hospital. Authorities say the dwelling did have smoke detectors, but it was unknown if they were working due to the heavy fire damage.
