Today we acknowledged the braveness and caring qualities of one of our own students who jumped in to help in a frightening situation this week. The following was read over the school intercom : …
“On Wednesday, January 8, 2025 at about 2:11 PM, school was dismissed and one of the buses was at the intersection of fourth and Calhoun Street in Peru. A 911 call was made telling of a nine-year-old autistic child having multiple seizures on school bus that had left SOAR. This bus has stops at multiple schools within the district and transports students from various schools.
A seizure is an abnormal electrical discharge in the brain. Anyone at any age can have a seizure, but young children and older adult are at the greatest risk. Seizures can be frightening for a parent or any adult.
Soar high school student AKye was on this bus and acted very swiftly to help the situation. He Remained calm and focused on keeping the child safe until EMS arrived on scene. AKye did not panic and kept the child as comfortable as can be and assisted in getting medical help to the scene.
I would like to present AKye with a certificate of appreciation to express our heartfelt appreciation to AKye M. for his unwavering dedication, calm, outstanding performance and valuable contributions to the emergency medical system for assisting with medical help of a nine-year-old autistic person having a seizure on the bus .
Lt Bernabei and I present this award to Mr. AKye M.
Please congratulate AKye when you see him in the hallways of SOAR as we are proud to have him in our school.
