STREATOR – Streator’s council discussed whether to act on a city sales tax for marijuana on Tuesday. According to City Manager David Plyman, the city just recently received a memo letter from legal council on the matter. Plyman says it’s going to be a learning curve. If they allow sales, the city would have to amend codes and develop some form of regulation for employers and employees.
Mayor Jimmie Lansford believes marijuana is a gateway drug and has mixed emotions about implementing a sales tax.
Councilman Joe Scarbeary says if the city want to use the legalization as a source of revenue, they need to act immediately.
