Your “Daily Dose of Uplift” for February 24th:
It’s a rarity when an emergency goalie is called upon in the NHL. The Chicago Blackhawks had to call on an accountant to fill the net for a game in 2018. It resulted in a win. A similar case can now be said for the Carolina Hurricanes.
On Saturday, the Hurricanes called on 42-year-old David Ayres, a 42-year-old Zamboni driver, to play goalie after injuries to both of their goaltenders. Ayres made eight saves on 10 shots and helped galvanize Carolina to a win over the Toronto Maple Leafs. Ayres was at the same with his wife, and was able to preserve a 6-3 lead, making his first NHL appearance a win.
This might not be the most uplifting story for Toronto fans, but it’s inspiring to see a story like this. I vividly remember how the city of Chicago rallied around Scott Foster after his one-game stint as goalie two years ago, and seeing the Hurricanes team and fans rally around their unlikely hero is something that doesn’t get old.
