Your “Daily Dose of Uplift” for September 15th:
18-year-old Justin Gavin was on his way to a store in Connecticut when he saw a vehicle fire. Inside the vehicle was a mother and her three children.
Officials said Gavin chased down the burning car, opened the driver’s side door and pulled the mother out first. As the fire grew, he pulled the three children in the backseat, including a four, nine, and one-year-old, who was secured in a car seat.
“I was scared ’cause I didn’t know whether the car was gonna blow up at that instant,” Gavin said.
Police Chief Fernando Spagnolo presented Gavin with a “challenge coin”, one of the city’s highest honors.
“It’s just to acknowledge this heroic act that you conducted today and just a token of my appreciation for you being a great member of this community. I appreciate it. Thank you very much,” Spagnolo said.
The coin symbolized courage and bravery, which Gavin clearly demonstrated in a couple quick-thinking minutes amidst a harrowing situation.
