UTICA – The City of Utica is recognizing the 175th anniversary of the I & M Canal and proclaiming the following year will be the year of the canal. The I & M Canal opened in 1848, and since has been a connection between the Illinois River and Lake Michigan, helping travelers on their journey throughout the country. The Canal Corridor Association has a multitude of events planned taking place between April 2023 and April 2024 in the Illinois & Michigan Canal Heritage Area, from Chicago to Lasalle-Peru . Communications Coordinator Britnee Eccles is hoping the year-long celebration will spark interest in the area.
